Wokingham Town is one of the oldest clubs in Berkshire. Founded officially around 1875, there was a reference to the club in early October 1874, making Wokingham Town (maybe) the third oldest after Maidenhead United (1870) and Reading FC (1871).

Players who later had a significant career in the game including Darren Barnard signed by Chelsea for £ 100,000 in 1990. And representing England at a level below 18, Barnard continued to get more than 20 caps for Wales at the international level.

Speaking of people who continued their significant careers, Phil Alexander played for Wokingham in the early 80s before being shouted by Norwich City. He will play American football as a kicker for London Monarchs before moving to the Football Administration, first with SWIndones Town then for 26 years as CEO of Crystal Palace. He is currently the CEO of the Enterprise National League.

In 2004, the club joined the EMMBROOK Sports of the Reading Senior League (now Thames Valley Premier League) to become Wokingham & EMMBROOK. The club is nomadic because most of the initial life in the Hellenic League before the approval was given in July 2016 for the spotlight and hard at Lowther Road – EMMBROOK Sports House. The nomadic period after the sales of the Finchampstead Road saw Wokingham calling three different districts outside of Berkshire Home. The game is played at Egham Town (Surrey), Flackwell Heath (Buckinghamshire) and Henley Town (Oxfordshire) and two spells with Bracknell Town, Windsor and read the famous old Elm Park FC. During the 20 -year -old spell on the road, Sumas also spent several seasons in Lowther Road and Cantley Park.

Pinch from Wokingham Today: In April 1939 Wokingham Town officially opened the new Finchampstead Road and Grandstand pavilion with a special exhibition match featuring Chelsea FC, drawing around 900 spectators.

The end of the 1989/90 season saw Slough Town Pip Wokingham for promotion to a soccer conference (now the national league) where they spent seven of the next eight seasons. A similar story was followed for the two clubs with the existence of nomades and lowering divisions. Since then Slough has returned after the suspension of late sentence in 2008 avoiding a decline in regional football suffered by Wokingham.

Wokingham Town did fly striker George Torrance from Germany for the FA Cardiff City Cup tie. ‘El Prez’ Mark Ashwell confirmed the story a few years ago. The 1982/83 season saw Town playing eight matches to reach the first round of the FA Cup on the right, bring Cardiff City – then from Division 3 of the Soccer League, to Lowther Road. According to Getty Images, Wokingham’s goal scorer in a 1-1 draw was George Torrance-a soldier based in Berlin who was flown back mainly for the game. Sumas was beaten 3-0 on Ninian Park Replay.

Another important moment in history for the club is running to the FA Cup semifinals in 87/88. The Sumas finalist defeated the last season of FA Trophy Spennymoor United at that round but was finally beaten 3-0 aggregate in the last four by Telford United.

Local Domination: Between 2008 and 2015, Wokingham & EMMBROOK won the Senior Reading Cup five times, including four in a row between 2012 and 2015.

Has been 150 years old rollercoaster. In July 2025, the name of the city of Wokingham was good and completely returning. Lowther Road is the club’s land and there is a possibility that there will be 150 years.
