‘Disputes towards jihadist countries. Respect Hamas’s terrorism. ‘
That is the reaction of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the announcement of Keir Starmer that, unless certain conditions are met, Britain will recognize the state of Palestinian.
Taking is wrong as dangerous. But this is a line driven by Netanyahu and his officials, echoed by some people in Washington, and people who were anesthetized by too many British politicians who were still afraid to show moral leadership.
Let’s clarify: Nothing about diplomatic recognition is the reason for the horror of 7 October. Hamas Investigation Hamas.
There is no IFS. Nothing but. The pain that it caused was real and lasted for a long time, with dozens of hostages was still being held in Gaza.
Recognizing Palestine is not about Hamas.
In fact, it is one of the few steps left that can help ensure Hamas does not shape the future of the Palestinian people’s politics.
Hamas claims to be an effective representative of Palestinian resistance but recognition will empower alternative leadership – someone who is credible, moderate and recognized internationally.
Then, and only at that time, we can start changing conversations from war to peace and retaliation to diplomacy.
Recognition is about the principle that Palestinians, such as Israel, are entitled to live in peace, in security, and with dignity.
Denying that rights – and postponed endlessly, as British and our allies have done too long – just deepening the feeling that the world is comfortable with permanent work and slow death from people.
So, is Starmer announcement a positive step? Yes. But that is not far enough.
Conditional recognition still treats Palestinian rights as a gift for good behavior, not as a fundamental right under international law.
Spain, Norway and Ireland recognize Palestinians unconditionally. France is preparing to become the first G7 country to do the same thing. British pressure to attach a string makes us look shy, not principled.
Our position is not only not morally coherent. Increasingly embarrassing.
147 out of 193 UN member countries have recognized Palestine. Even near US allies in southern global – such as Brazil and South Africa – shifted.
We run out of allies to hide behind.

If Starmer really wants to rearrange the global role of the British-and let’s be honest, post-Brexit we do not really lead the package and he must break up with Trump’s style requirements that have only stopped peace.
I have written and talked broadly about how proud I am in our country, for various reasons.
The best, we are a moral compass for clear, principled, and willing to lead. We may not have American or Chinese military power, but the world is watching what we do because we provide rare moral clarity.
In Ukraine, we are perfect: consistent, brave, must be morally. We did not blink before choosing the side. We punched over our weight – and indeed.
However, in Gaza, we doubted and slowly. And I hate saying it, but that doubt will mark our history.
Logic efforts that recognition must occur after negotiations failure of Palestinians for decades. You cannot ask people to negotiate for their humanity while denying that they are even people.
Recognition is not a gift. This is a prerequisite for every meaningful peace process.
Speaking as someone from the Jewish background, I felt this acute.
October 7 triggered a deep generation trauma. Fear, sadness, and anger are real.
But the pain does not justify the collective penalty of more than two million Gazans, or blinds us with the basic rights of Palestine – the same rights that we all enjoy.
Precisely because I believe in safety and justice for the Israelites that I must also believe in safety and justice for Palestinians. The truth is not a threat – that is the only way forward.
Britain has a historical role here and monler responsibility that is monumental. From the Balfour declaration to our colonial heritage, the British helps form many conditions that determine the current conflict. History requires us to do more than just watching.
So, we can continue to squeeze our hands while the house is leveled, the hospital is bombed, hunger, and children to starve to death. Or we can do as we have in Ukraine and draw a line.
We know this is not true – we feel it in our core.
That is why only 14% of British people oppose the recognition of the Palestinian state, according to the new Yougov vote, and why we are almost twice likely to sympathize with Palestinians over the Israelites.
Not because we are antisemite. Not because we are anti-Jewish. We do not. Our country has a history that is very proud of welcoming Jewish, and Long Mei who continues.
But it is time to join the countries that are willing to say: Enough. The path to peace begins by acknowledging that the two people are property, and we must recognize Palestine quickly – without conditions.
When the world turned against the Apartheid of South Africa, no one said, ‘Prove you are ready to be dignified.’ It was given because it was true, not a gift.
Recognition will not end the war overnight, but we owe, first and especially, to the Palestinians.
And by doing that, we can reaffirm the role of the British as a moral leader by sending a clear message: we refuse to let Hamas or Netanyahu define what peace is.
