Permanent move for former Binfield hero Sheffield Wednesday – Football in Berkshire

Goalkeeper Killian Barrett has made a permanent move from Championship side Sheffield Wednesday to League Two Barrow AFC.

Barrett has spent time on loan at Boston United in the National League this season and now has an 18-month contract with Barrow. He also spent time on loan at Solihull Moors and Rochdale and also earned a call-up to the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 side last year.

Speaking to Barrow’s official website, Barrett said: “I was so excited when I got the call about my interest and I kind of let it go and see what the next chapter of my life would bring.

“I was only told about the move a few days ago and after speaking to the people at Sheffield Wednesday, I felt it would be a good move for my career.

“I also feel like this will be a big step forward for me, so now it’s time to put my head down and get to work.”

In July 2024, Barrett made the save that ensured Binfield completed a ‘great escape’ against Uxbridge. Reporting on his move on Wednesday at the time, Football in Berkshire wrote: “With Moles losing 1-0 to Uxbridge in a game they needed to draw or win to guarantee safety on the final day of the season, Barrett looked down at the approaching center forward and dived with zero margin for error.

“As the Moles supporters took a deep breath, Barrett appeared with the ball safely in both hands.

“That moment was the start of Moles’ equalizer with the last kick of the match, but it was the key moment in the match that kept Binfield ahead – there was no telling back from 2-0 down.

“Barrett’s rapid rise to the Championship began when he was seven years old playing for Ballisodare United in his native Ireland, where he was scouted by Mayo SL Airtricity and went on to win the All Ireland Futsal title with his school.

Binfield wasn’t Barrett’s only stop in England, when he moved to England aged 17 he signed with Hartley Wintney. Last season he took the opportunity to play for the first team in the Woodley United Combined Counties League before being snapped up by new Binfield boss Ross Weatherstone for the Moles’ great run.
