People who oppose the construction of one of the largest solar farms in Europe said the term ‘nimby’ is a speech hate.

Botley West Solar Farm can cover around 2,470 hectares of rural areas at West Oxfordshire and 330,000 power if approved.

But Save Botley West said this would affect 15 villages and water grasslands and inheritance sites throughout Botley, Woodstock and Kidlington.

Chairman of the Anti-Sollar Agricultural Campaign Group, Professor Alex Rogers, said they said they were nimbys ‘alienating’ them.

Nimbys – ‘Not in my backyard’ – are people who oppose new housing or infrastructure that are sometimes needed that are built near their homes.

Prof. Rogers said: ‘We have heard the term nimby wrapped by the labor government in particular, effectively which is a degrading language that is deliberately used to alienate and isolate ordinary people who are legally worried about the very serious impact of what, basically, is an unsustainable project.

“I will see a sustainable project as a project that is clearly beneficial for the climate, which is carried out, but also benefit people who live in the region and benefit wider environmental aspects – and this scheme certainly does not do that.”

A website that appears to make fun of the Rogers group, ‘Botley West Nimbys’, was made in 2023, according to the internet archive seen by Metro.

It is said: ‘Look, our place is far more special than yours, so you must have all the items we don’t like near you.’

Rogers added: ‘I have a message, especially for the Labor Party, in connection with the use of “nimbys” or “nimbyism”.

‘If you look at the UN definition of hate speech, the use of the term is included in the UN definition, and I think workers will be surprised if people use this kind to alienate other parts of society.’

The United Nations defines hate speech as a form of discriminatory and offensive expression, often targeting race, gender, sexuality, or class of people.

Save Botley West joined the national paths to protest agriculture on Sunday, walking from the Blenheim gate to the Churchill grave in Bladon.

They wrote to King Charles last month, asking him to intervene on the grounds of the 18th century law which said that the crown must be consulted to use the land. The king hasn’t answered.
