Many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers still have the former wildcard perhaps considering the best time to hit the reset button.
Match week 12 would be a popular choice, as it marks the start of favorable fixture changes for some clubs. The November international break also gives FPL officials plenty of time to play around.
But Game week 13 is also a comfortable window, with Manchester City starting their run of games looking exciting from here on out and Chelsea’s fixture list tightening.
So, to help solve the ‘Gameweek 12 v 13’ conundrum, we’ve put together a list of some of the pros and cons for each game.
GAMEWEEK 12 WILDCARD: ARGUMENTS FOR + AGAINST
| Arguments For | Arguments Against |
|---|---|
| Reacting to international break injuries: The main advantage of using Wildcards in Matchweek 12 is that you can respond to any injuries that may arise while the player is on national team duty during the break. | Wait a week at Chelsea + Sunderland? Both sides have fragile mid- to long-term timetables. However, the Blues still have a more interesting match against Burnley (a) in Matchday 12, when Sunderland also face an interesting visit to Fulham (a). Keeping in mind the desire, when using Wildcards, to prepare our team for the future, must still book transfers to replace popular players such as Joao Pedro (£7.5m) opting to save him for one extra game isn’t necessarily ideal. |
| Capture price changes for two weeks: Given that the international break lasts for two weeks, activating the chip as early as possible after Matchday 11 also allows managers to do this to react to price changes over the two weeks, building team value, which could prove crucial to making the desired move at the end of the season. | Man City’s swing begins in earnest in Gameweek 13: City host Newcastle in matchday 12, a game you might want to avoid (the Magpies are much better at home and are likely to be ready for the bigger games). We might want to let the Citizens know after that, considering their form and upcoming games, so waiting a week wouldn’t be the worst idea. |
| Large equipment swing: Matchday 12 also features important fixture changes for several teams, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Bournemouth.
The Reds, for example, have completed their trip to the Etihad and now face the likes of Nottingham Forest (h), West Ham (a), Wolves (h), Leeds (h+a) and Fulham (a) in the New Year’s Ticker record. It’s a similar story for the Red Devils, who only trail their old foes on the Ticker between Matchweeks 12 and 20, with games against West Ham (h), Wolves (h+a) and Leeds (a) to come in the near future (plus there’s no midweek action to spark rotation concerns!). With slightly narrower coverage of Matchweeks 12-18, Bournemouth – having weathered recent tests against Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Aston Villa – are second to Liverpool. |
Liverpool’s uncertainty: Just when they looked like they were back on track, with nil wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid, Liverpool went off and put in a performance like That against Manchester City. Are we sure we want too many Reds players and, if so, which ones? Not many people are raising their hands right now.
Mohamed SalahThe underlying figures (£14.2m) continue to rise but the price tag is huge Virgil van Dijk (£5.9m) is a good bet to get DefCon points – but so are many of the other players who are cheaper and perhaps even more likely to keep a clean sheet. Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.6m) has been Liverpool’s best player this season but he is not someone who has had many golden chances; His last shot in the box came in Gameweek 7! We could give the Reds another week to see if City is (a) just a blip, with a game against Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest (who will almost certainly stay deep) and a Champions League clash with PSV perhaps a better audition for an opponent of the caliber to come. |
| Sunderland + Spurs exit? Teams like Sunderland and Tottenham, meanwhile, have enjoyed good form in the early stages of the season, having their players embedded in many FPL squads, but both teams sit in the bottom four of Fixture Ticker when looking at the future.
The Lilywhites are also hard to trust from an FPL perspective, although Sunderland look increasingly reliable. |
Blocking Bench Boost: Lastly, and this of course happens every week, but playing your Wildcard in Gameweek 12 will block the use of any other chips that week.
Bench Boost will not be possible even if your squad looks well prepared to face it, if your squad features cheap defenders such as Sunderland, Chelsea, Palace or Manchester United, who are all in good form. Even Leeds – whose preferred manager is budget-friendly – will host Aston Villa, who allowed the most defensive DefCon points to be scored against them. |
| Get ready for forward rotation: We will have 10 Gameweek deadlines in the span of 46 days. Many Premier League teams will play midweek, every week, from now until mid-January, so rotations are likely to increase. So, organizing your bench will be important. Have a replacement player (and not unreliable fodder Josh Acheampong (£3.9m)), which should not be difficult given the defender’s availability for £4.0m, is a must going into a period when big names could be given a chance to rest. |
GAMEWEEK 13 WILDCARD: ARGUMENTS FOR + AGAINST
| Arguments For | Arguments Against |
|---|---|
| What better time to play Man City: As discussed above, City will now escape the potential danger posed by their visit to St James’ Park – where they have won just one of their last four games – and instead enjoy a journey through Gameweek 20 that sees them trail only Liverpool in the Fixtures. | Is Free Hit better in Gameweek 13? Could Wildcard Gameweek 12 + Free Hit Gameweek 13 be a better strategy?
Free Hit Gameweek 13 will allow managers to move, or reduce representation, Arsenal and Chelsea assets during the week, when both sides meet each other. Likewise, Palace and Man Utd will play each other, while Bournemouth face a less easy test against Sunderland. This is a team whose players you might want long term but whose Gameweek 13 entry point isn’t the best. |
| The right time to leave Chelsea: On the other hand, Chelsea in Gameweek 13 have skipped their match against newly promoted Burnley, and instead sit second bottom in the Fixture Ticker until Gameweek 20.
At that point, the Blues, whose squad rotation is likely to become an increasingly common problem due to increasingly busy schedules in all competitions, will soon face Arsenal (h) as well as the rest of Bournemouth (h+a), Newcastle (a), Villa (h) and Man City (a). Even the good game, at Leeds (a) is the middle game in the Premier League Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday series, so it’s likely that Enzo Maresca will rest some bodies at Elland Road. |
Closer to AFCON transfer top-up: To help overcome the impact of player departures for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which takes place from FPL Gameweek 17-22, each squad will have a full number of free transfer players filled to maximum five in Gameweek 16 – regardless of what you have accumulated at that time of your own accord.
Considering only two Match Weeks occur between that point and Match Week 13, you may feel as though you’re not maximizing your Wildcard usage since you can make as many as five more changes for free immediately after. |
| One week more information before week three games: Our first midweek gameweek was held in early December. That means Game Week 13-15 lasts a week, and will likely signal an improvement in the rotation. Could an extra week be worth second-guessing everything that needs to be done? For example, rest for the likes of Salah or Szoboszlai in the match against PSV on November 26 will certainly increase their chances of starting all three of the next Premier League games in succession. |
HOW DIFFERENT WILL GAMEWEEK 12/13 WILDCARD BE?
GAME WEEK 12
Van Dijk started thinking about Wildcards in Gameweek 12, but how do we accommodate Liverpool’s attackers? It’s wrong if it’s expensive Erling Haaland (£14.8m) is still standing, so one possible way is to upgrade Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m) to Szoboszlai and chose the cheaper one Ibrahima Konate (£5.4m) over van Dijk.
Antoine Semenyo could also be omitted at the expense of Szoboszlai, with his numbers dropping and testing less easy outside the West Ham game.
Jean-Philippe Mateta (£8.0m) was a not easy omission, but with Ismail Sarr (£6.7m) as Palace coverage and Igor Thiago (£6.3m) at his best (plus having a pretty good kit), this may have been a necessary and reluctant trade.
There are five DefCon machines at the back, including van Dijk, all of whom have made 100+ defensive contributions this season.
GAME WEEK 13

In fact, the Gameweek 13 Wildcard teams won’t be much different.
But how to include City’s other assets beyond Haaland? The Bournemouth side could potentially give way, with their fixture list perhaps not looking good after West Ham were knocked out. Sunderland away has certainly looked a lot tougher of late:

We’ve moved David Raya (£5.9 million) to Jurrien Wood (£6.1m) to accommodate (hopefully) the safest route to the City’s defences, Gianluigi Donnarumma (£5.7 million), but If Guard (£5.8m) is certainly an alternative. City’s defender’s weakness is his lack of DefCon points, while Donnarumma rarely gets points saved. Both can be avoided if desired.
As with any City midfielder, there is a risk of rotation from week to week. Phil Foden (£8.0m), in eight consecutive league games, included here at the expense of Semenyo as an example.
There’s not much difference between the two Wildcard plans – so your decision may depend on, among other things, how much you like City’s assets other than Haaland for the foreseeable future.
