Lovro Budišin last weekend was the overall winner of the 23rd Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – and the first Croatia was completed first.
Which seems inevitable confirmed on the last day of 2024/25 as Lovro, who has led the pursuit package from Gameweek 31 and so on, held at the top and ended 23 points in front of his closest challenger, Jack Brennan.
The 24 -year -old player, who studied Geodesy in Zagreb, almost set a new point record, also (somewhat helpful by the new assistant manager chip), fell 34 short from 2,844 hours Pigott in 2021/22.
This marks a big increase in Lovro’s previous best finish: 508K at 2023/24.
National Croatia is good enough to answer our questions this week, and thank you to Lovro for your time.
Congratulations on being an FPL Champion. How did you spend the last day?
Thank you very much. For me, it is a day like the others. After waking up, I went to drink morning coffee with friends, and after that, I went to a family birthday party. There, I used one phone to find information about who would start, and the others where I simultaneously use the application and think of the possibility of change. Then, I also participated in the match using tablets and two cellphones. When finished, I have a short celebration and then start working on seminar paper for the university!
With such a big advantage to enter Gameweek 38, how sure you will win? Is there a gameweek before the last day where you are sure you are enough to complete first?
To be honest, I’m still not sure that I will win. The last gameweek usually has many goals, and I can’t relax until the final whistle. I agree that I have good clues, but this is not the first time something miraculous has happened in the last round.
In Run-in, do you change tactics or change the way you usually play in terms of protecting instructions?
In the last gameweek, I saw the team of the players in the top five and tried to predict what they might do if they plan to overtake me. I can say that I played the round more defending myself than usual.
You have played for many seasons and the best before is 500 thousand, so what has changed this year?
The only difference this year is that I am consistent: I don’t forget to transfer or change my captain! In most of the previous years, I will give up after forgetting to do those things. Also, luck is on my side.

What is your approach to preparing Gameweek 1 squad? I noticed, for example, that you become very cheap in the back (three £ 4.0 million Def/GKS, three with £ 4.5 million) and have eight attackers that can be played, rather than a midfielder/food striker. Do you see yourself repeating that approach going forward?
In today’s football, the focus is on the appeal and scoring goals, so I also prefer to have stronger players in midfield and attack. In defense, I tried to find as many offensive -minded players as possible at an affordable price. I think I will hold on to that approach next season too, but I will see the transfer once again will play a big role in decision making.

Your ranking is 2.8 million in Gameweek 4. Nine green arrows respectively, which takes you to the top 500 in the world. What is your approach during these weeks, because you are patient and hold on to Wildcard to Gameweek 12?
Everyone has a bad gameweek, but the season is long and there is no room to panic. Everything can change only in a few rounds, so I keep playing as if nothing happened. Being the first in the first part of the season does not guarantee anything, and also, my rank of Gameweek 4 is not so important in the end. It is important to trust your own choices – that does not mean they will give every gameweek, but there is a reason I choose it. I use Wildcard when I feel I need a really new team, whether it’s because of the form of players or the upcoming schedule. I don’t use chips impulsively.

There is a change in the transfer rules this season but you only roll into three on one occasion, and that is not until Gameweek 33. You also take three hit. Is the change in transfer rules not changing the way you play or is it more a case that continues to be a player to sell (ie injury) and move where your hands are forced?
I like that change, but honestly, it is very difficult to reach the maximum amount of free transfer – there is always an injury or role and importance of new players in team change. I also oversee the difficulties of future equipment. I am not a big fan of taking points; I really only use the option in a situation like in Gameweek 29, where I take -4 instead of using a free hit chip. The difference between four points is not small, but if a player is injured for a longer time or I have a strong feeling that someone might explode that week, then I consider it.
Have you ever made a transfer at the beginning of the week to pursue the team’s value (not that seems as important this season)? Do you prefer to survive until later this week and get more information?
To be honest, I can’t agree that the team’s grades are not so important this season. In the end, I can have practical 15 first team players, all of which are potential beginners and point scorers. During the first part of the season, I pay more attention to price changes, but I am also not a fan of getting rid of players just because the price drops. Sometimes I take the risk by making a transfer at the beginning of the week if I am sure I want to bring a certain player, and then, when I have enough money, I can wait until the end. Always better when you have luxury to wait for a deadline that can change for a week in terms of player fitness or coach-play relationship.
You have held Mohamed Salah throughout the season and only have Erling Haaland for one gameweek. Are Norwegians teasing you in the early weeks when he bangs a goal to have fun, and are you a very big prayer fan of your confidence in him? Are you going to support the wrong next season?
To be honest, I was not really calm when I saw how Haaland started the season, but it was more or less with him, who was relief. Also, players like Son Heung-min, Kai Havertz, Ola Aina and Chris Wood are big added values for me in the battle against Haaland points. In my opinion, it is always better to have several players who can carry points, rather than relying on one or two and hope the rest do something.
I don’t know who I have next season – there are many factors that play a role, and the price is the main. Of course, Salah is likely to be a key player Liverpool again, but I also hope that some new stars appear on other teams. I can’t say I’m a big fan of wrong, but I am very aware of the quality. It is much easier for me to play this game because I am not a fan of certain teams in England – I only enjoy the league itself for the quality of football and the excitement it carries.

You have a success rate of 83.3% of the captain (7+ points of return) this season. Wrong is clearly a big attraction (you become the captain on 23 occasions) but what is included in your captain’s decision every week?
For me, regardless of all the available statistics, what I checked, the most important thing is the feeling that helped me throughout the season. When I have a number of players that I consider to be a captain, I discussed all the pros and cons with friends, and in the end, I chose players based on my own idea of how the match would occur.
Defenders struggle for returns this season. I noticed you only started four backs on two occasions (outside the bench boost) as well. Are you more focused on the potential to attack with defenders or have you ever seen towards the big beams where the clean sheets are also possible?
I mostly focus on defensive players who have the freedom to move forward and those who are dangerous from set pieces – whether they take it or the main target. I think it is very difficult to predict which team will keep clean sheets, so I’m more than happy when it really happened.
In the same subject, how much attention do you give to medium -term equipment (ie do you use equipment ticker)?
Well, I can’t say I don’t see the future equipment, but for me, it’s only an additional factor when bringing new players or getting rid of the current one. Still, it doesn’t always work as we expect. There is a gameweeks where I made a transfer of thinking that was a good step, and then the player did nothing against the team that was supposed to be weaker, while what I sold finally print or helped.
You have several success with assistant managers this season, making three two-digit transport (including 20-point Oliver Glasner). What do you think about chip and you want to see it again this season?
To be honest, I like that chip, even though I think it can be improved further. Maybe it can give more points when there are greater differences in the table between the team – of course, if the team is “weaker” defeating the “stronger” – and maybe their away victory can be valued differently. I am sure there are smarter people who will examine it. I just hope that the chip will be an option this year.

The ‘analytic’ movement has seen a slight improvement in the last season. Are you a big data user (projected points, etc.) or you tend to be more with your own instincts and feelings? What tools do you use, if any?
I saw the previous match from the team playing and saw whether a player tends to prefer to play against certain teams. I also relaxed through YouTube videos with projected points, but in the end, I always left with my own feelings.
Which player you think can do it well on FPL next season? Do you pay attention to the stars of escape?
To be honest, I don’t even know now who will live or signing which new will be brought. It is very difficult for me to decide anyone, but for example, I really like the signing of Jeremie Frimpong for Liverpool. If Florian Wirtz also signs, it will also be an interesting choice.
