An Angell in a time of need? More Celebration headlines on request. The only thing that matters is that defender Curtis Angell has returned to Thatcham Town with a club in the Combined Nations League relegation zone.
Angell’s departure from Hungerford Town was confirmed on Monday evening and was quickly followed by an announcement from Combined Nations League Premier Division South Thatcham that he would be returning.
The Kingfishers were 9th after the sixth game of the league season but suffered a dip in form that started with a ridiculous 6-2 defeat at home to Knaphill.
‘Ridiculous’ because after watching the game, I remember thinking that there was no way a game couldn’t have as much excitement as it should have had eight goals in it.
Since then (23 September) there have been eight defeats in league play plus FA Vase, County Cup and Premier Challenge Cup exits – although ironically Knaphill only gave Thatcham their second win on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 at home.
As one of Thatcham’s famous FA Vase winning players, Angell will no doubt bring defensive solidity to the team and that will start when they host Cobham on Tuesday evening.
Binfield have added young defender Joshua McMenemy to their squad on a one-month loan from Maidenhead United.
Counties League affiliate Reading City have landed highly-rated Swindon Town youngster Anton Robinson.
The 6ft 5in goalkeeper replaced longtime goalie Charlie York in goal. York, the club’s leading appearance maker is currently out until the New Year due to undergoing surgery.
Manager Simon Johnson said: “We are delighted to welcome Anton Robinson to the club. He is a talented young goalkeeper with real presence, and he will provide vital support to the squad while Charlie York recovers from his operation.”
Meanwhile Hungerford Town have strengthened their Southern League side with the signing of Cole Fleming, who joined on loan from Chippenham Town.
The Crusaders website said: “The exciting young winger, who came from Cardiff City before joining Chippenham this summer, adds even more options to our squad.”
Enterprise National League South Slough Town have signed two players, including one for an undisclosed fee (which is an interesting duo of words for those of us of a certain age).
21-year-old forward Ruben Shakpoke has signed from Welling United for an undisclosed fee and, according to the Rebels website, he has ‘an interesting pedigree, having progressed through the academies of Norwich City, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion before gaining senior experience in the National League system’.
Another new rebel is 21-year-old midfielder Jacob Borgnis who joined Slough on loan from League One Reading. A statement said: “Born in New Zealand, the right-footed midfielder is known for his intelligence on the ball and adaptability, characteristics that have seen him trusted in a variety of roles during his progression through the Royals squad.”
Outside Berkshire, former FA Vase winner Rhys Forster has joined Uxbridge of National League South Enfield Town.
