The family of a British aid worker was reported to have died in a strike of Russian drones when volunteers in Ukraine had been abandoned in a limbo, for months after his death.
Annie Lewis Marffy, 69, traveled from his home in Silverton, near Exeter, Devon, at the end of May to send green Toyota Rav4 which was packed with supplies.
He arrived in Ukraine on June 4 but did not meet the coordinator of Ukraine UK AID, the non -profit NGOs who had organized the mission, as planned.
After a week of looking for it, the organization was contacted by the Kramatatator District Police Department and said that he had been killed.
The police report said that he suffered a ‘injury that was not in accordance with life’ after the Russian drone strike between 11 and 12 June, after parking RAV4 on the road in the contested Donbas region.
His body remained in the ‘active hostility’ area, making it difficult to move it.
His family requested a certificate of death, through local authorities or foreign offices, Commonwealth and Development (FCDO), saying it would allow them to grieve correctly and start the judge’s ratification process.
Marffy’s son, Charlie Lewis Marffy, told the BBC that the family did not want to blame anyone for what happened.
“He is brave, able and determined, but we never want him to leave,” he said. “He is happy, happy to be able to do something meaningful.”
He said the family had asked Fcdo and Ukraine authorities for death certificates issued, based on police reports, and left ‘disappointed’.
‘He is irreplaceable. I feel very sad because he is no longer here, but I am very proud of who he is. ‘
Katarzyna Bylok, Founder of Aid Ukraine, told the PA news agency that this process could take months or years.
“In the killing zone, where the body is, it is impossible to recover them because anyone you send will also die,” he said.
MS Bylok said there was a speeding process in Ukraine to certify death where the remnants could not be restored, although this still took six to 12 months.
‘They will never get their bodies. But what they need is the ability to close their affairs. His son tied their hands, they did not have a power of attorney, ‘he added. ‘There is enough evidence to prove that Annie is dead.
‘The procedure that states that you need to have the remnants or DNA for death certificates need to be renewed.’
A spokesman for Fcdo said: “We support the family of a missing British woman in Ukraine and are related to local authorities.”
